What guidance does the Bible provide?
Galatians 2:20 "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me." A spiritual birthday is celebrated on the anniversary of the day that someone decides to follow Christ. This is a great time to remind them of what Christ did for them. Keeping this in the forefront of your child's mind at this special time is essential for them and their growth in Christ.
Colossians 2:6-8 " So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness." This verse reminds us that we need to continue to live and walk with Him. He is the one that provides all of our strength and help in our times of need. The imagery of being rooted in Him tells us that we are found in Christ and are to continue to grow spiritually stronger.
Things to think about:
The day that your child decides to trust Jesus is an exciting time and needs to be rejoiced and shared with others. Document this time by taking a photo of them or sending a letter to family and friends. Make this a time that they will remember.
Sometimes children ask questions about becoming a Christian; this process can be fast or slow. It all depends on if the child is ready to make those next steps or not. When your child senses the need to follow Jesus, you will know that they are ready. Choose to embrace the small steps your child makes towards salvation.
What do I do now?
There are many ways that you can create a special time of celebration:
- Host a party for your child to celebrate
- Have a cake
- Write verses on cards to encourage them as they follow Jesus
- Write a letter with your child to God thanking Him for the gift of salvation
- Compose a list or letter of ways that you have seen God work in your child's life and spiritual landmarks that they have had during the year and present this to them
- Go out for a special dinner and order dessert
- Give your child an age-appropriate daily devotional
- Present your child with a new Bible
These celebrations allow us to take time to reflect on what God is doing in our lives and how far He has brought us! This is a time for our children to build on the foundation that they have in the Lord as well as learn more about what salvation means for them. Commemorating the steps they have taken is a wonderful way to encourage your child to dig deeper and strengthen their relationship with Christ. Parents have the power to make lasting spiritual impressions on their children. What better way than to take the time to celebrate the special moments in their child's spiritual walk.
